The ADA at 34 | People with disabilities should be included in the workforce

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, making it illegal to discriminate against individuals with disabilities and encoding their right to access and accommodations. 34 years later, we recognize how far we have come in making our communities more inclusive of and welcoming to individuals with disabilities. We also recognize that there is much more that can be done, and that among the most pervasive and damaging of exclusions is that from our workforce.

While individuals with disabilities are employed at only half the rate of those without disabilities, there is evidence that companies who employ individuals with disabilities are more productive and profitable. VGS is committed to connecting businesses and employers to individuals with disabilities to create opportunity for both parties – our work is essential to our community and to our economy.

Today is an excellent time to read about the competitive advantage that hiring individuals with disabilities can have and to learn more about the ADA. You can also recognize the 34th anniversary of the ADA by donating to the VGS Annual Fund which will help us provide work opportunities to hundreds of Ohioans with disabilities this year.
